Transcontinental Railroad

Transcontinental Railroad

By: Naser Naser

A transcontinental railroad is a contiguous network of railroad track that crosses a continental land mass with terminals at different oceans or continental borders. Such networks can be via the tracks of either a single railroad, or over those owned or controlled by multiple railway companies along a continuous route. Although Europe is crisscrossed by railways, the railroads within Europe are usually not considered transcontinental.
Transcontinental railroads helped open up underpopulated interior regions of continents to exploration and settlement that would not otherwise have been feasible. In many cases they also formed the backbones of cross-country passenger and freight transportation networks.
The government also agreed with the Transcontinental Railroad because it gave people a reason to travel from place to place and also because it opened a new way of communication all across America and getting to know the land in each region better.

  1. I agree with your statement of it helping open up underpopulated areas. I feel like the West would have been discovered later than it did if the railroad wasn't made. It shined a new light on new opportunities for not only Americans but also for Immigrants as well. It created jobs and acts that not only benefited the people but the government too.

    1. I understand you idea that it helped many immigrants to because of the ability to move from region to region with much more ease than it would normally take.

It also helped immigrants communicate with each other better. While they were working on the railroads I imagine they would be communicating with each other.

  3. I agree with your statement "transcontinental railroads helped open up underpopulated interior regions of continents" I believe without the railroad the westward expansion would not have made as big of an impact as it did. While the gold rush was the main concern of the west at the time it wouldn't have been accessible without the construction of the railroad.
